I recently learned that Migraines are caused by a hormonal imbalance in most cases. That most girls start having them around about when their 1st cycle occurs. This was stated by Barbara O'Neill. Also stated that starting 1st cycle early, acne, heavy or painful periods, endometriosis, PMS, hair loss, weight gain, and constipation are other symptoms of hormonal imbalance. Other symptoms are depression, heart disease, thyroid disfunction, fibroids, cysts, polyps in uteris, uterian or cervical cancer are some other symptoms. For males low sperm count, PD aka ED, or prostate issues.
The normal time for the 1st cycle to begin is 16 to 18, but in today's world girls are starting as early as 8 years old.
Me, I had my first migraine at 13 during an after school volleyball practice. One of the guys was picking on me, and swung me around in circles on the gym floor by my feet, then it was on. My symptoms we debilitating and scary. So much, my grandma who was an RN, took me to a specialist, a Neuorolgist.
(symptoms described in the post below)
After that I found that any trauma or heavy vibrations to my head would be followed by a migraine. I used to love roller coasters, but one day when riding the cannon ball which had 2 upside down turns when I got off the ride found that my head didn't like it anymore. Symptoms started to begin. I had to rush to call for help before I was helpless in the amusement park. I also learned that stress and scents would also trigger a migraine. Sometimes strobbing lights would.
I had my first menstrual cycle the summer between 8th and 9th grade at age 14. I turned 15 just after school started. I was a late starter when I grew up. All of my friends had already had their first cycle for years. This was in the early 90's.
During this time in life I was having 3-4 debilitating Migraines per month. The Neurologist had perscribed a daily (inderal), and an onset pain medication for me to take.
I found myself stressing myself into a migraine if I forgot to take my daily medication. I eventully stopped taking it after a couple of years.
The pain medication he gave me for onset would upset my stomach, and I would vomit more often than not which made this process so much worse. The migraine from start to finish was several hours 6-12, would usually subside once I was able to sleep at least 6 hours this was unmedicated. Once I got meds that help the process it reduced the time gradually down to 2-4 hrs per occurrence.
Once I started my cycle the abdominal pain was severe, I'd be in the fetal position crying the 1st two days. They were a medium to heavy flow, and would last 5 to 7 days. The occurance was usually irregular 30 to 38 days apart. As I got older the cramps dwendled down to nothing, occurance became more regular every 24-28 days, flow to medium, and would last the same time of 5 to 7 days. More recently I've skipped periods 2 in 2024, and 3 in 2025 so I know my hormones are imbalanced.
I chalked it up to premenapause, but learning that an imbalance of female hormones is also a sign of or related to an imbalance of thyroid hormones was news to me.
I have symptoms that could fall under several catagories. Elevated cortisal, hormonal imbalance, disfunctional thyroid, leaky gut, fatty liver or heavy metal posisoning.
The Dr. said that IF I have a fatty liver there is no cure, I could alter my diet to maintain the current state of my liver, but it would never improve. She said she run blood tests on my thyroid, and a couple other test.
I've learned that with hormonal imbalances there will also be elevated cortisal.
She ran 2 out of 6 of the thyroid tests. The results shows I have hypothyroidism (self diagnosed), but the Dr. says "it looks ok".
TSH reflex to FTA VAL 5.78 H REF Range .043-5.25 (mU/L)
Thyroxine Free (free T4) VAL .72 L REF Range .86-1.76 (ng/dL)
Yet I show all the symptoms: I lost a third of my eye brows, lots of hair loss, weight gain, fatigue, dry skin, cold intolerance, muscle aches, constipation, and brain fog. The only symptom I don't have is depression.
I also have sugar cravings, regular mild headaches, joint pains, lower back pain, heel pain, fingers tingling, and sometimes charlie horses in the left calf. I started my menstral cycle at 14, had painful periods, and ovarian cysts
Most women who have Hypothyroidism are misdiagnosed and go untreated. When they are finally treated it's the wrong way. They take Levothyroxine a synthetic T4 which will make their blood work look good, but they will feel the same. They will still not be able to loose weight, they will still be tired, aching with brain fog. All you do with this medicine is trick the test results. No healing is done.
How to cure both the Thyroid and the Progesterone deficiency ?
